The Explosion of the Cannabinoid Marketplace

March 15, 2023
Cannabinoids are a group of chemical compounds that are found in the cannabis plant and other less well-known sources in nature. They interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is involved in various physiological processes such as appetite, mood, pain sensation, and immune function. With the eruption of the hemp-based cannabinoids in the marketplace, it seems new cannabinoids are popping up all the time. Let’s take a few minutes to discuss the 10 most common cannabinoids being sold in products today:
  1. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol
    (Delta-9 THC)
It is the primary psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It produces the euphoric “high” associated with marijuana use. It also has medical properties, including pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects. Once only available in states with progressive cannabis legislation or through the illicit market, hemp-derived Delta-9 is now available almost everywhere today thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill.
  2. Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol
    (Delta-8 THC)
Similar in structure and effects to Delta-9 THC, but it is less potent. It has psychoactive effects and is being studied for its potential use in treating pain, anxiety, and nausea.
  3. Cannabidiol
    (CBD)
A non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It is known for its therapeutic effects, including reducing anxiety, inflammation, and pain. It is also being studied for its potential use in treating epilepsy and other neurological disorders.
  1. Cannabinol
    (CBN)
a mildly psychoactive compound found in aged cannabis. It is formed when THC degrades over time. It has sedative effects and is believed to be effective in treating sleep disorders.
  2. Cannabigerol
    (CBG)
A non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It has been found to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It is also being studied for its potential use in treating glaucoma and cancer.
  3. Cannabichromene
    (CBC)
CBC is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It has been found to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. It is also being studied for its potential use in treating depression and anxiety.
  4. Tetrahydrocannabivarin
    (THCV)
A slightly psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It produces a more energetic and stimulating high than Delta-9 THC. It is also believed to have appetite-suppressing effects and is being studied for its potential use in treating obesity and diabetes. Focus and concentration are also said to improve with THCV. More research will surely be coming on this rare cannabinoid.
  1. Cannabidivarin
    (CBDV)
CBDV is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It has been found to have anti-seizure effects and is being studied for its potential use in treating epilepsy and other neurological disorders.
  2. Cannabicyclol
    (CBL)
CBL is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis and is formed when CBC degrades. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.
  3. Cannabitriol
    (CBT)
CBT is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It is believed to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
As we begin to understand cannabinoids and their functions in the human body, more research will be taking place to provide better, more targeted remedies for all sorts of ailments. But remember, Delta-9 THC is still a Schedule 1 drug in the United States. Until that changes, researchers’ hands are tied for the most part and potentially healing uses of these plant compounds will go undiscovered or stay in the grey area that they are today.
