An Introduction to Cannabis Terpenes

March 10, 2023
Ever wonder what gives cannabis such a unique scent? How some strains can smell like sweet candy and others like gasoline or a skunk? Terpenes are what make these unique scent profiles possible and it turns out they’re a lot more important than we once thought.
Science has discovered at 30,000 different terpenes that occur in nature. Everything from the relaxing scent of lavender to the invigorating scent of pine in a forest full of conifer trees, all can be attributed to the effects of terpenes on our nervous system. Although cannabinoid content, mainly THC content, is generally how cannabis quality is judged, cannabis users are becoming wise to the effects of terpenes and why they matter. The terpenes in cannabis appear to have great therapeutic benefit and play an enormous role in the overall experience of the user.
Let’s take a look at three of the most common terpenes in today’s cannabis strains:

Myrcene:

The most common terpene in modern cannabis strains is myrcene; a woodsy & spicy scent profile makes this one easy to spot. This terpene is responsible for enhancing that relaxed, sedative effect of your favorite indica strains. Other plants that contain high levels of myrcene include basil, mangoes, and hops. The strain Gelato is a great example of a high-myrcene strain that also features our next popular terpene: Beta-Caryophyllene.

Beta-Caryophyllene:

Responsible for the peppery and spicy scent of strains that contain it, beta-caryophyllene has shown to be an effective anti-inflammatory agent and binds freely to the CB2 receptors in our bodies. Most modern strains contain plenty of this valuable terpene. Look for it in any GSC or Sherb crosses. Sour and Chem crosses also contain ample amounts while balancing it off with a highly energizing terpene, Limonene.

Limonene:

Limonene has been shown to boost energy and play a role in the activating adenosine receptors, which are responsible for the production of our feel-good chemicals serotonin and dopamine. It has also been shown to combat anxiety and help with an overall sense of calm. A fruity, citrusy aroma accompanies these benefits and helps to round out the sedative qualities of some heavier-hitting strains like OG’s and Chem strains.
